Science talk

From the 13 year old in the car.
Him- Mom, did you know that matter cannot be created or destroyed?
Me- Hmmmmmm.
Him- The only way you could even THINK about creating matter would be to get a nuclear reactor and put one element into it and blast a proton in it and spin them around and you have a one in a million chance of them hitting one another and creating a new one.
Me- (crickets)
Him- Isn't that awesome!
Me- (silence)
Him- MOM!
Me- You lost me at proton.

There may or may not have been some more talking about the periodic table and new elements, but I can't be sure as I was in my happy place. :)

Tell him this tomorrow: matter CAN be created and destroyed when you consider the whole universe. The sum total of matter and energy is always the same, but matter can be converted to energy and visa versa. All that according to Einstein's E=mc2 equation. See what he has to say then. :)

I'll read it to him. :)

Wow! Sounds like you have a genius at your house. I thought it was funny when we went to see Tangled my son whispered to me, as she let down her hair, "that's a pulley". (but at least I knew what a pulley was, lol!)

But you have to give it to him - he's paying attention in class.
